The Red Cross estimated 45,000-50,000 people were in the devastating
earthquake in Haiti killed as rescuers race against time to find
survivors.
The United States is sending up to 3,500 soldiers and 2,200 Marines, but
correspondents say, the help is so slow that the extent
President Barack Obama has promised one of the largest relief operations
in the recent history of the United States and Haiti said not to be
forgotten in this hour of need
Aid agencies say they need food, water, lift, medical supplies and
equipment.

Haitians are still digging through the rubble with their hands. The

promised relief efforts began in earnest.
But he warned it would take time for the urgently needed aid to reach
people.
Obama has also pledged 100 million U.S. dollars aid to Haiti immediately
and said the investment will help in the coming year on the long-term
reconstruction.
The first 100-strong contingent from the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division
to arrive in Haiti at the end of Thursday, hundreds of others here on
Friday.
The aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson and the USS Bataan, a Marine
Expeditionary Unit are on their way.
Gen. Douglas Fraser, head of U.S. Southern Command, told reporters that
the logistics would be the key to relief and that the U.S. forces are
trying to Port-au-Prince, Port functioning again.
